From 1897-04-10 The Age of Steel

Hoefer Manufacturing Co. was created in 1896 when employee August G. Hoefer bought and renamed Stover Novelty Co., makers of drill presses and power hacksaws; the Stover drilling-machine patents include among the inventors August Hoefer, Emil A. Hoefer and Frederick W. Hoefer.

From 1919-11-06 Canadian Machinery

The company survived until at least 1963 as Hoefer Manufacturing Co., Inc., makers of a full range of drilling, boring and tapping machinery plus power hacksaws.

  • According to the EAIA Directory of American Toolmakers, this company was originally known as Stover Novelty Co., and was purchased and renamed in 1896 by August G. Hoefer. Stover Novelty Co. had made drill presses and power hacksaws.
  • 1929 catalog, plus listings in 1917 dealer catalog.
  • Directory of American Toolmakers indicates that the company was bought by Oliver Machine [sic] Co. in 1944.
  • A correspondent reports that there are quite a few old Hoefer power hacksaws that came out of school shops. The original colors were "Institutional Green" frames with chrome-yellow moving parts and bright-orange electric switch.
