This little-known maker was active from 1874 to about 1920. In his earlier years—until at least 1894—he made a few woodworking machines, including bandsaws and jointers.

  • We learned of this maker from a member who saw a jointer on eBay with the following cast into the base: "Built By / F. E. Whitney / 65 Sudbury St. / Boston, Mass."
  • At the 1887 Exhibition of the Massachusetts Charitable Mechanic Association, F. E. Whitney of Boston won a Special Diploma for the continued excellence of his ice cream machinery.
  • The 1893 The Boston Almanac and Business Directory lists, under machinists, "Whitney F. E. 65 Sudbury".
  • The 1894 Boston and Bostonians had the following entry.
    F. E. WHITNEY. Manufacturer of Water and Electric Motors, Gas Engines, Ice Cream Freezers, Etc., No. 03 Sudbury Street.—One of the most successful and versatile inventors in Boston is Mr. F. E. Whitney, who has been established in business here since 1874, and is widely and deservedly prominent as a manufacturer of water and electric motors, ice cream makers, gas engines, band saws, shafting, pulleys, hangers, bicycles and general machine work. ...
  • The 1913 Directory of Massachusetts Manufactures lists, under "Foundry and Machine-Shop Products", "Whitney, F. E., 65 Sudbury St., Boston."
  • The Boston Register and Business Directory for 1918 lists "Whitney F. E. Co. 65 Sudbury" under machinists, ice cream freezers, water motors,
