This machinery maker was in business from at least 1865 to 1899, and probably both before and after that range. By 1899 they were known as "L. S. Heald & Son".

Information Sources

  • Adams, Sampson & Co.'s he New England Business Directory for 1865 lists, under Planing Machine Manufacturers, "Heald Stephen, Barre".
  • Ads in 1867-1868 issues of "Scientific American".
  • Listing in the 1874 work, Wiley's American iron trade manual of the leading iron industries of the United States: "Stephen Heald & Sons - Iron foundry and machinery. Planes, screws, carriage and matching machines, keg machinery, turbine wheels, iron fences, etc."
  • An ad in an 1899 "Carpentry and Building" magazine is from "L. S. Heald & Son" of Barre, presumably a successor firm to this one.
