In patent 520,019 (1894), Robert Howard Grant added refinements to this Richardson grinding machine. In practice, the Richardson machine was used for the first grinding, then the balls were hardened and then the Grant patent machine was used for final grinding. This basic process was used for several decades.

The statements about the Richardson-Grant and N. Sawyer processes are taken verbatim from early ads by Grant Anti-Friction Ball Co.
