Key to Links for Patent Information

USPTO = U.S. Patent Office . Images of the actual patent can be viewed on the U.S. Patent Office web site but a special TIFF viewer must be installed with your browser in order properly work. More information on how to configure your computer to view these patents can be found at TIFF image Viewers for Patent Images.
DATAMP = Directory of American Tool And Machinery Patents . A sister site to VintageMachinery.org with information on patents related to machinery and tools. A much easier user interface than the USPTO's for finding information on machinery patents.

773,591 Nov. 01, 1904 Multiple-spindle drill-press Charles De Los Rice Hartford, CT This patent date was seen on a drill press from Henry & Wright Mfg. Co. of Hartford. We have also seen an undated condensed catalog from British maker Smith & Coventry, Ltd., which is titled "Sensitive Drilling Machine (Rice's Patent)". The text inside refers to "patents" and we presume that Rice's various drill press patents were all licensed by that maker.
981,390 Jan. 10, 1911 Belt-gearing Charles De Los Rice Hartford, CT The manufacturer information is somewhat speculative: the patent was not explicitly assigned to Henry & Wright but an early patent to this inventor, 773,591, is known to have been used by that firm. Rice seems to have been a professional inventor as his numerous patents span machine tools, streetcars, trains, typewriters, and tire repair. Most of his patents were not explicitly assigned.

"The invention consists mainly in belt gearing comprising step cone or multiple pulleys on the driving or driven shaft, or, preferably, on both, and intermediate pulleys or idlers and provisions for varying and determining the position thereof so that each step or pulley of one shaft may coöperate with any step or pulley on the other shaft, and the belt be properly guided tightened to transmit the rotary movement from one shaft to the other..."
