From about 1899 to 1902, this firm made wheel and spoke machinery. The principals were Edward Flickinger, Ferdinand "Fred" Unckrich and Frank Flickinger. A related company, Flickinger Wheel Co., went bankrupt in 1902, taking the Galion National Bank with it. Edward Flickinger was ultimately sentenced to 7.5 years in prison for fraud for his part in the fiasco. So far as we can tell, Flickinger Company disappeared at about the same time.

Information Sources

  • The 1902 book, A Centennial Biographical History of Crawford County, Ohio, has the following information on this firm:
Another enterprise with which [Edward Flickinger] is actively connected is conducted under the name of the Flickinger Company, the partners being our subject, Fred Unckrich and Frank Flickinger. The enterprise was established for the purpose of manufacturing a special line of wheel machinery, consisting of the Unckrich patent spoke polishing machine, a wheel riveting machine and several other machines which are now in process of construction. The company controls the patents on these machines, which are sold to wheel manufacturers all over the United States, and are spoken of in terms of highest praise wherever used.
  • American Carriage and Wagon and Accessory Trades Directory for 1903 lists "Flickinger Co., The (wheel and spoke machinery) Galion [Ohio]".
  • Numerous online sources report on the charges, trial, and conviction against Edward Flickinger. One such is a New York Times article on the sentencing.
