Patent Number Date Title Name City Description
49,739 Sep. 05, 1865 Improved process of distilling petroleum Levi S. Fales New York, NY British patent 186,600,606 appears to cover the same invention, and that patent makes clear that it was being used by the Bay State Iron Works of Erie, Pa., site of the first oil boom.
186,600,606 Feb. 28, 1866 Improvements in the process of and apparatus for the distillation of tar and other substances" Levi Spaulding Fales New York, NY William Edward Newton was with the Office of Patents and is the one who applied for the patent based on "a communication to him from abroad" by the other (and actual) listed inventors. Charles Harrison Lovrien's surname is spelled as "Lovrein" in the patent documents; he spelled his name that way until the 1870s but we have used the Lovrien spelling for consistency with his 1879-1881 US patents. In 1865 Lovrien established the Bay State Iron Works in Erie, Pa, the place and time of the first oil boom. Soon after, Leonard H. Hall became a partner in the business, and then in about 1868 Orange Noble replaced Lovrien. Hall & Noble operated the Bay State Iron Works for many years.

(See that entry for note of subsequent Board of Commissioner of Patents decision removing Banister as co-patentee).
This patent was used in one version of the ACME CUBE PIPE TONGS produced at the BAY STATE IRON WORKS operated by Noble, Hall and Co. of Erie, PA. One known example with a different retaining means for the hard cube "tooth" is marked "HOLLANDS MFG. CO. ERIE PA." and does not include "ACME PIPE TONGS" or the 1880 patent date.
Lovrien's Canadian patent 11709 granted Sept. 3, 1880 claims all the features of the ACME CUBE PIPE TONGS, and provides his full name.
Another example of the ACME PIPE TONGS is marked with patent date Aug. 6, 1872. That patent is William Campbell's patent no. 130,278.
