The business was formed before 1866 by Charles James Appleby and Thomas Hodgson Appleby. In 1896 (see below) Appleby Brothers merged with Joseph Jessop and Sons, becoming Jessop and Appleby Brothers. In 1908 Jessop and Appleby Brothers merged with the Glasgow Electric Crane and Hoist Co. and the Temperley Transporter Co., being known as Applebys.

Appleby's catalog was called "Appleby's Handbook of Machinery" and they were in seven bound volumes, called sections. Section I was engines, Section II hoists, Section III pumps, Section IV machine tools, Section V construction and railway, Section VI mining and manufacturing, and Section VII reference. They were published at irregular intervals by E. & F. N. Spon of London, the leading British technical publisher of the day.
