This maker of engine lathes was established in 1916 and appears to have been in business only until about 1920. The president was Vernon F. Prentice, who had been with drill and lathe maker Prentice Brothers; that firm seems to have disappeared before 1916 so it is possible that Vernon Machine Co. is in some way a successor to Prentice Brothers.

  • The 1916 Abstract of Corporations Organized Under the General Laws of Massachusetts lists Vernon Machine Company, with capital stock of $10,000 in 100 shares. Date of organization was 1916-03-06 and date of incorporation was 1916-03-08.
  • The 1916-03-23 Iron Age has the following news item:
    The Vernon Machine Company, Worcester, Mass., has been incorporated with capital stock of $10,000. Vernon F. Prentice is president; Victor E. Rolander, vice-president; Harry V. Prentice, treasurer, and Chester W. Warren, clerk. The company will build lathes. Vernon F. Prentice will supervise production and Harry V. Prentice will look after finances and sales.
  • The September 1916 Machinery has an illustrated article on this company's new 11-inch lathe.
  • The Massachusetts Abstract of the Certificates of Corporations Organized under the General Laws of Massachusetts lists this firm. As of 1917-12-31, their assets included $19,000 in real estate, $35,017 in machinery, $8,479 in stock and raw materials, and $18,637 in cash and receivables.
  • The 1920 Worcester City Directory lists Vernon Machine Co.: "54 Hermon, inc. 1916. Pres. Vernon F. Prentice; Treas. Harry V. Prentice; machinery mfrs". A text ad in that directory just says, "Manufacturers of engine lathes".
