Founded about 1878 by Martin Williams in the former Scudder's "fifth wheel" factory. In 1887 he employed about 60 workers. The firm would later become the Clark Machine Co.
The plant of the Rumsey Gas Engine Company is being moved (in 1905) from Binghampton, N. Y., to St. Johnsville, same state, where the business will be consolidated with that of the St. Johnsville Agricultural Works — a concern that has already built up a large business in the manufacture of steam engines, threshing machines, etc. The capital stock will be increased to $75,000 and the company will be re-incorporated under the name of the Rumsey-Williams Manufacturing Company. A considerable addition will be made to the working force of the company.
