In 1857, H. L. Beverly was granted a patent for a shingle machine. Later that year he was manufacturing it.

Ad in the 1857 Lovell's Canada Directory.
The Descriptive Catalogue of the Provincial Exhibition, at Toronto, September 1858 has a list of models in the patent office, including "Beverly's shingle cutting machine".
