Established in 1899 after a few years as a subsidiary of the American Watch Co., Sangamo Electric Co. manufactured electric motors as well as clocks, timers, power meters, and possibly other products as well; this website's interest in Sangamo's products is restricted to their motors and not to their meters, which seems to have been their mainstay product line. We have had more reports of electric motors from their Canadian subsidiary, Sangamo Electric Co., Ltd., than from the parent company.

In 1975 French conglomerate Schlumberger acquired Sangamo Electric Co. In 1978 Schlumberger closed down Sangamo's Springfield plant.

Information Sources

  • An online version of the book Sangamo, A History of Fifty Years, privately published by Sangamo in 1949, provided some of the background history of the parent company.
  • The establishment date of this firm comes from the above-listed book. The date disagrees with the date—1905—given on a couple of other sites, but the Sangamo history book is well researched and authoritative.
  • An online history of Sangamo Electric Co. provides a more detail history and includes photographs of employees and products.
