From about 1854 through at least 1861, John L. Brown manufactured shingle and lath machines of his own patented design.

  • James Sutherland's Indianapolis Directory and Business Mirror for 1861 lists "Brown John L., patent right dealer and manufac. of Excelsior shingle and lath mahines, h. 54 n. Noble."
