Walter J. McVicker was the engine designer for Alma Mfg Co. and he received a number of patents for both gas engines and gas tractors. In 1913 the firm was reorganized as the Alma Motor Truck Co. and again in 1914 as the Republic Motor Truck Co. The company acquired the Linn Mfg. Corp. in 1928 and finally merged with the American-LaFrance Co. in 1929 to form the LaFrance-Republic Corp.
