Harmon, Gibbs & Co. was founded in 1877 by Clarence G. Harmon and George H. Gibbs to make Ajax steam drilling engines for the oil fields. They incorporated in 1892 and changed the name to the Ajax Iron Works with Frank L. Bliss as president and Clifford H. Bagley as secretary/treasurer. By 1895, the firm employed 300 hands.
