Ruston & Hornsby Ltd. was formed in 1918 as a merger between Richard Hornsby & Sons and Ruston, Proctor and Co. They were also known as the Sheaf Iron Works. In 1966 Ruston & Hornsby was acquired by English Electric Co. and merged into English Electric Diesel Engines Ltd. Only two years later, English Electric Co. was acquired by General Electric Co., Ltd., a British firm not related to the similarly-named American company.
