We have seen a substantial cast iron grinder arbor with this name cast prominently into it.

Information Sources

  • Thanks to Stephen Dukoff for bringing this maker to our attention. The arbor in question is labeled "E. HOFFMAN MACHINERY SUPPLY / 181 KING ST. TORONTO".
  • A web search turned up a mention of a South Bend lathe with a dealer tag from E. Hoffman Machinery Supply of 181 King Street East, Toronto.
  • The University of Toronto Report of the Board of Governors for the Year Ending 30th June 1943 mentions a vise purchased for the physics building from "E. Hoffman" for $40, plus a drill press purchased from "E. Hoffman Machinery Supply" for $127.70.
  • We could not find any Canadian or American patents that were assigned to this firm, nor could we find any patents granted to an E. Hoffman of Toronto or vicinity.
  • Seen on Facebook Marketplace: a steam-cleaner for fur coats from Canadian Hoffman Machinery Company., Ltd., Toronto, "Manufactured in Canada". Numerous patent numbers and dates are listed. From a Newmarket newspaper website: "The west side of Charles Street, including part of Concession Street, was sold by the town to the Canadian Hoffman Co. for $200 under the terms of a bylaw to construct a factory to employ at least 50 people. The firm was a subsidiary of Hoffman Machinery Co. of New York and manufactured laundry machinery and institutional equipment." An ad in 1931-12-04 Canadian Jewish Review gives their address as 31-35 Mutual St., Toronto; an ad in the July 1952 Newfoundland Journal of Commerce gives their address as 126 Dundas St. W., Toronto. It seems likely that Canadian Hoffman Machinery Co., Ltd., is unrelated to E. Hoffman Machinery Supply.
