Established in 1770 by Benjamin Burrell, the company was founded by Joseph Burrell in 1793 and was passed to his son, Charles upon his death in 1837. It became Charles Burrell and Sons in the 1870's when Charles brought his three sons into the firm. In 1884 the business was incorporated as Charles Burrell and Sons Ltd.
