It provides infinitely variable feed speed and reversing, all controlled by a single lever. It uses two belts and two idler pulleys, but is very simple in its operation. This design was simplified even further in patent 404,002.

Reamy, of Nashville, Tenn., to build a machine shop at Chattanooga." A web search did not turn up any more information on this business.
A 1901 catalog from A. B. Farquhar Co., Ltd., features their "New Ideal Reamy Friction Feed... unquestionably the simplest, most durable and surest in use..."
