Springfield Machine Tool Co. was founded in 1887 by Phillip E. Montanus, William H. Owen and Frank Kempsmith as a lathe subcontractor for Lodge, Davis & Co. The Springfield–Muller lathe was designed by Edward A. Muller who was the superintendent of Lodge & Davis Machine Tool Co. William H. Owen founded Owen Machine Tool Co. in Aug. 1893.
