Key to Links for Patent Information

USPTO = U.S. Patent Office . Images of the actual patent can be viewed on the U.S. Patent Office web site but a special TIFF viewer must be installed with your browser in order properly work. More information on how to configure your computer to view these patents can be found at TIFF image Viewers for Patent Images.
DATAMP = Directory of American Tool And Machinery Patents . A sister site to VintageMachinery.org with information on patents related to machinery and tools. A much easier user interface than the USPTO's for finding information on machinery patents.

883,649 Mar. 31, 1908 Grinding-machine Abraham B. Landis Waynesboro, PA "In the use of glass stoppers in bottles designed for containing liquids charged with gas, it is essential that the seat for the stoppers in the neck of the bottle shall be perfectly true and smooth and also that the stopper shall have a correspondingly smooth surface, perfectly true to fit therein, in order to prevent any leakage of the gas and consequent impairment of the liquid. The object of my said invention is, therefore, to provide machinery for the purpose of grinding the seat for the stopper in the neck of the bottle and also to grind the stopper so that it will fit perfectly in said seat."

1,121,714 Dec. 22, 1914 Multiple Use Machine Conrad M. Conradson Madison, Dane County, WI Application renewed 10 Jan 1912.

Ingle Machine Co. went bankrupt in 1914 and the trustees sold the patent rights for this machine to the Landis Tool Co. Landis contracted with the Gurney Electric Elevator Co. to manufacture this horizontal boring machine.

1,181,113 May. 02, 1916 Metal Working Machine Conrad M. Conradson Madison, Dane County, WI
1,244,449 Oct. 23, 1917 Boring and general-use machine William R. Carey Cleveland, OH The patent documents misspell the inventor's surname as "Cary". Subsequent litigation consistently spell his name as shown here. The inventor had been employed as a draftsman by Ingle Machine Co., and that company used his invention before the patent was applied for. The company went bankrupt and the assets were sold to Landis Tool Co., and those assets included drawings for Carey's invention, and presumably would have included the "shop right" to use the invention. But Carey's employment contract with Ingle Machine Co. did not explicitly assign them the rights to any inventions. After the bankruptcy Carey applied for the patent and Arthur Ingle was the assignee. Meanwhile, Landis hired Gurney Electric Elevator Co. to manufacture boring machines of Carey's design. Ingle sued for patent infringement. Landis claimed absolute title to the patent and demanded that the patent be turned over to them. Landis won but, on appeal, Ingle not only won the title to the patent but Landis, having failed to claim shop right to the invention, lost the right to manufacture the drilling machine and had to pay for infringing the patent.
1,316,221 Sep. 16, 1919 Metal Working Machine Conrad M. Conradson Madison, Dane County, WI
1,437,319 Nov. 28, 1922 Clutch mechanism Abraham B. Landis Enfield, PA
1,490,516 Apr. 15, 1924 Change-speed gearing Abraham B. Landis Enfield, PA The inventor was deceased by the time the patent was issued.
1,681,793 Aug. 21, 1928 Flexible coupling Amos P. Steiner Waynesboro, PA This flexible coupling consists of a pair of plates, each with a circle of pins, so that the circle of one set of pins fits completely within the circle of pins on the other plate. Then a rubber or leather band is snaked sinusoidally around the pins, providing the flexible coupling between the plates. This invention has been seen on various woodworking machines, and has also been seen in a catalog from the S. A. Woods Machine Co., labeled as the Woods Flexible Coupling.
