If you have information to add to this entry, please contact the Site Historian.

In 1882 (or perhaps shortly before), the American Chain Mortising Machine Co. was established. Within the next year or so they were assigned a pair of patents for chain mortisers, placed an order with a local job shop to manufacture a dozen chain mortising machines, and then went out of business.

The two patents assigned to this company were granted to Taylor E. Daniels and William W. Green, Jr. We do not know if they were involved in the company as we have not been able to find any mention of the company's officers.

Information Sources

  • A search has failed to turn up a single directory listing, ad, or article on this company's products.
  • 1883-01-06 Mechanics. "The American Chain Mortising Machine Company, of Chicago, Ill., have placed with Mr. O. Colborne an order for 12 chain-mortising machines. Mr. Colborne has also recently completed two 12 x 18 inch engines. A new shaping machine is being placed in his works, and he is running night and day, owing to pressure of business."
  • 1883 Report of the Secretary of State to the Governor of Illinois list American Chain Mortising Machine of Cook County, Ill., as having paid $2 fee for "license to organize" and also a $3.50 fee for "final papers", i.e., company dissolution. The report covers the period from 1880-10-01 to 1882-09-30, which is difficult to reconcile with the above-mentioned report on O. Colborne.
