In 1870, when this patent was issued, the inventor was partner in steam engine manufacturer Wheeler & Whitlock, which became Wheelock Engine Co. in 1887.

Claim:
My invention consists in certain novel features in the construction and arrangement of mechanism, and my object has been to produce a boring apparatus possessing a greater degree of general utility, and capable of more perfect results in its operation.
24,137 May. 25, 1886 Steam engine Jerome Wheelock Worcester, MA "New and improved construction of distributing valves and mechanisms." An 1889 catalog from Goldie & McCulloch features the "Wheelock Automatic Cut-Off Engine" and they claim to "have built more Wheelock Engines than the combined output of all Brown and Corliss Engine builders in the Dominion." The catalog also gives a long list of Canadian users of the Wheelock engine, and notes that they had sold more than 260 such engines.
