Hiram Francis Crafts (sic.)

      Born at Elmira, N. Y., 1 Jan., 1842. Married 25 Feb., 1804, Eustatia Weston, daughter of William and Delihah (Vunk) Weston of Charleston, Montgomery Co., N. Y., where she was born 21 Jan., 1840. On the breaking out of the Civil War he enlisted as private in company G, 8th Pa. Cavalry, and served until the close of the war. He was taken prisoner in 1863, and was confined for a short time on Belle Isle. He was repeatedly promoted for gallant conduct on the field, and was said to be the youngest commissioned officer in his regiment when it was mustered out of service. After the war he located at Williamsport, Pa., and assumed charge of what was then known as the "McCann" planing mill, where he remained for some time. For the next eight or nine years he followed the business of consulting engineer and contractor, designing and constructing some of the most complete mills for the working of lumber, in the country. Under the style of "Crafts & Filberts," he also bought and sold machinery, and succeeded in building up a large and profitable business. In Apr 1887, he associated himself with the firm of E. & B. Holmes of Buffalo, N. Y., and assumed the management of the wood-working machinery department of their business. They reside in Buffalo.
