In 1835 L. A. Spalding of Lockport, N. Y., was manufacturing Rich's patent sawmill dogs. By 1855 the business was operating as Spalding's Machine Shop, with proprietors Alex Pound and Lyman A. Spalding, and they were making steam engines, sawmills, shingle mills, and bedpost lathes..
