This firm was active between 1880 and 1892, and likely for longer. They made wood lathes, metal lathes, scrollsaws, bandsaws, and various non-woodworking products such as dental and engraving machinery and sidewalk elevators. The principals of the firm were Adam Ulscht and Andrew Linn.

Ad from 1880 "Troy City Directory"

Information Sources

  • The 1870 C. C. Drew's Rochester Directory has no mention of Ulscht & Linn, nor of Ulscht. There is a listing for "Linn Andrew jr. machinist, Mill corner Furnace, boards 129 Jay".
  • The 1879 Rochester Directory has a text ad from "Ulsht [sic] & Linn".
  • Listing and ad in 1880 Troy City Directory. The address was "131 N. Water Street", and the products were "Side Walk Elevators, Wood Turning Lathes, Dental and Engraving Machinery... • The Commercial Publishing Co., Ltd.'s 1884 Commerce, Manufactures & Resources of Rochester, N.Y. has an article on this firm. The writing in this book is unusually bloated even by the dismal standards of that genre, so we have extracted the few factual nuggets below:

ULSCHT & LINN, Machinists... 131 and 133 North Water Street.

...machinery and the manufacture of Automatic Wood Lathes, Dental and Engraving Machinery, Scroll Saws and Sidewalk Elevators, and a Patent Pressure Regulator for Brewers... Both members of the firm, Adam Ulscht and Andrew Linn, experienced mechanics, devote their energies to the business... Of that in use, we find four lathes, two planers, two drills, forge hammers, etc. ...the products of this house find a ready sale throughout New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio and the Western and Southern States generally... The manufacture of the Dobson Patent Scroll Saw forms a special branch of the business, and the firm's own Patent Pressure Regulator for Brewers, an invaluable invention to the manufacture of malt liquors. The manufacture of lathes for wood and iron work is also an important feature of the business...
