This business operated under a series of names over the years, as summarized below.

• 1905-1906: Taylor & McKenzie is a Guelph machine shop, operated by Daniel McKenzie and James Andrew Taylor.
• Later in 1906: Taylor & McKenzie is replaced by D. McKenzie & Co..
• Sometime between 1910 and 1917: name changes to D. McKenzie Machinery Co.
• 1918: The McKenzie Machinery Co., Ltd. incorporated in Preston (now part of Cambridge), Ontario; the Guelph business continued in parallel.
• 1922 (approx): The Preson business disappears.
• 1924: D. McKenzie Machinery Co., Ltd. of Guelph is incorporated.
• After 1938: D. McKenzie Machinery Co., Ltd., disappears.

The early product line (1906 to 1910, say) included gasoline engines of 3 and 40 HP, but engines seem to have been quickly dropped in favor of machine tools. Drill presses, engine lathes, power hacksaws, and shapers were made. By 1922, and perhaps earlier, the company was making woodworking machinery, including tablesaws and a planer.

The Toronto-based A. R. Williams Machinery Co. was a major distributor and we suspect that D. McKenzie made some of the A. R. Williams-branded machines that we occasionally see. As further evidence of a close relationship, T. A. Hollinrake was president and general manager of A. R. Williams and was also president of the Preston-based McKenzie Machinery Co., Ltd.

Information Sources

• 1891—In a report on the results of the provincial plowing match: "Special price for oxen... 4th prize, special for the best finish with oxen, by D. McKenzie, Guelph, $2, A. Bolton." It seems that D. McKenzie awarded the prize to one A. Bolton. It is quite possible that this is a different D. McKenzie.
• 1900—For expenses related to the agricultural college at Guelph: "McKenzie, Duncan, blacksmith—47.03". For expenses of the "Normal School, London": "D. McKenzie & Co., repairs to air pumps, 1.10". This is a different D. McKenzie, possibly father or uncle.
• 1903—Public Accounts of the Province of Ontario for the Year Ended 31st December 1903, lists Taylor & McKenzie as having received $4.20 for "repairs" at the Central Dairy School. There were also a couple of payments made to a Duncan McKenzie for blacksmithing and horseshoeing. The 1907 edition of the same publication lists a payment to Taylor & McKenzie for repairs to an ice machine.
• 1906—Ad and article in July 1905 Canadian Machinery & Manufacturing News.

  Taylor & Mackenzie [sic][/i], Guelph, Ont., though kept busy by a jobbing business of considerable importance, started some time ago to manufacture hack saws for the Canadian trade. the demand for these encouraged them to broaden out and inventive genius suggested to them the plans of a turret punch, which is described elsewhere in this issue and which should have a fairly wide field of usefulness. It is this firm's intention to add other lines as the opportunity occurs.

• 1906—Canada Patent for a printing-press turret punch, jointly assigned to Daniel McKenzie and James Andrew Taylor, both of Guelph.
• 1906—November 1906 The Labour Gazette.

  A proposition has been made to the firm of Messrs. Taylor & McKenzie to move its plant to Sussex, N.B., and in an endeavour to keep the works here a movement is under way to form a joint stock company, with increased capital.

• 1910—Ads in 1910 issues of Canadian Machinery for bench and floor sensitive drills and power hack saw. The business address was 9 Nottingham Street.
• 1912—1912-06-13 The Iron Age.

  Daniel McKenzie proposes to erect in Guelph, Ont., a factory in which to make tools and small machines.

• 1917—The 1917-09-27 issue of Canadian Machinery has an ad from D. McKenzie Machinery Co., for The "McKenzie" engine lathe and a power hacksaw.
• 1918—1918-10-24 American Machinist.

  Ont., Preston—The D. McKenzie Machinery Co., Guelph, has taken over the plant of the Dominion Bronze Co., here, and will equip same for the manufacture of metal working machinery.

• 1918—1918-12-05 The Iron Trade Review.

  PRESTON, ONT.—The McKenzie Machinery Co., Ltd., has been incorporated to manufacturing machinery, tools, etc., with $200,000 capital, by Daniel McKenzie, Guelph, Ont.

  The McKenzie Machinery Co., Preston, Ont., is having plans prepared for an addition to its main shop and will require machinery.

  Contracts for six 14-inch lathes for the Hamilton, Ont., technical school were awarded, three to be furnished by the D. McKenzie Machinery Co., Guelph, Ont., and three by the Perfect Machinery Co. Guelph.

• 1922—August 1922 Canadian Woodworker and Furniture Manufacturer has an ad from D. McKenzie.
• 1924—A 1924 issue of American Machinist.

  The D. McKenzie Machinery Co., Ltd., has been granted federal incorporation in Canada with a capital of $100,000. The principal incorporator is Daniel McKenzie and the headquarters of the company will be in Guelph, Ontario.

• 1935—A 1935 issue of Canadian Bee Journal carries an ad from D. McKenzie Machinery Co.: "Make your own Bee Supplies with a McKenzie Saw Table A machine used by bee men from Halifax to Vancouver. Write for prices and circular. D. McKenzie Machinery Co. Guelph, Ontario". Also, "McKenzie Reputation and McKenzie Quality Mean Satisfaction to Every Purchaser."
• 1938—Sessional Papers of the Legislature of the Province of Ontario lists D. Mckenzie Machine Co. as having received payments of $75.23 and $73.40.
• A correspondent reported an identical pair of power hacksaws, one labeled "A. R. Williams Machinery Company Limited / Toronto - Montreal" and the other labeled, "MFD by The McKenzie Machinery Co / No. 1489 Guelph, ONT / The A.R. Williams Machinery Company Limited".
• Public Accounts of the Province of Ontario for the Year Ended 31st March 1936, lists D. McKenzie Machinery Co. as having received paments. The 1937 and 1938 editions listed similar payments, all for matters relating to the Ontario Reformatory.
