The high reputation which Rochester machinists' tools enjoy in the markets of the country is due to the inventive skill and energy of those engaged in their production, prominent among whom is Mr. F. P. Michel, who is the inventor of and manufacturer of n number of improvements in boring and turning machines.
The house of which Mr. F. P. Michel is the present sole proprietor, was founded April 1. 1864. by Messrs. F. P. & J. Michel, and has been conducted by him alone since 1868. His premises comprise three floors of the four-story stone building, located as above indicated, which covers an area of 70x70 feet The works are divided into several departments, are equipped with all the latest improved machinery and tools known to the trade, are operated by water power and furnish employment to about twenty skilled workmen.
Much of the success of this house may be attributed to the unquestionable inventive, genius of its proprietor, as is shown in several valuable improvements in his products. Among these may he mentioned his improved boring and turning machine. This machine is adapted to all kinds of cylinder boring, mill gearing, pulleys and water wheel work, etc. It is very powerful and can be set to turn any desired angle. Besides these machines are manufactured lathes, shaping planers, gear cutters, upright bench drills, self-feeding column drills, hand and foot power lathes, etc., and general machinists" tools, all of which are made from new and improved designs and patterns, and I are fully warranted as to material, efficiency and workmanship.
The trade of this house extends throughout the United States and Canada's, and is annually increasing.
Mr. Michel is a native of Germany, but has resided in Rochester for the past thirty-seven years, during which time he has been actively engaged in the manufacture of machinery as an apprentice, journeyman and proprietor. Honorable as well as liberal in dealing, we commend him to the attention of the trade, believing that his facilities, goods and terms are sure to be found desirable and highly satisfactory.
