One of the most important woodworking machinery patents, and a major advance over the hand planing of rough stock. The stock to be planed was placed on the carriage, and then shimmed so that it could not rock or flex. The carriage then moved under the horizontally-spinning cutter, which produced a flat upper surface. This flat surface could then be used as the reference surface when being fed through a Woodworth planer, as in patent 5,315. This machine must have been an awesome sight when operating: one mill site shows deep scouring of the building beams that were in the path of the chips ejected from their Daniels planer. |
