This firm was one of the many that sprang up after World War II to make hobbyist woodworking machinery. They survived until about 1956.

- In the May-October 1951 Popular Mechanics there was a small ad in the classified section: "FREE catalog. Full line hobby and light industrial power wood working tools. Dealers wanted. Backus Machine Co., Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin." The same ad appeared in the March 1953 issue also. Virtually identical ads appeared in Popular Science issues of the same period.
- 1956 MacRae's Blue Book listed "Backus Machine Co., PO Box 14, Chippewa Falls. Wis."
