Before the Civil War the inventor was an engraver and artist who published the Baxter Panoramic Business Directory in Philadelphia. During the Civil War he was a Lieutenant Colonel, then Colonel, then brevet brigadier general near the end of the war. Afterwards he continued as a naval officer until 1871; after that he was involved with the Keystone (Portable) Forge Co.
"Considerable experience in military life has led me to observe the defects of the mode of attaching the ordinary knapsack, and to attempt a remedy for them, which I think I have found in the present invention. The nature of my invention consists in supporting the sack by means of strips of wood (or metal, if preferred) extending from the shoulders to the hips, in such position as to prevent all pressure upon the loins, while the weight is thrown vertically upon the person of the soldier..." |
