The Davidson & Rutledge enterprise was backed by George W. Rutledge and James E. Lowry. Davidson was an engineer born on December 28, 1833, in Trumbull County, Ohio
For many years, he was on the road selling farming implements. As a result of his mechanical abilities Davidson was able to invent the Davidson Steam Traction engine, which did work on both the farm and the road. It was patented March 27, 1877.
