USPTO = U.S. Patent Office . Images of the actual patent can be viewed on the U.S. Patent Office web site but a special TIFF viewer must be installed with your browser in order properly work. More information on how to configure your computer to view these patents can be found at TIFF image Viewers for Patent Images.

Patent Number Date Title Name City Description
191,084 May. 22, 1877 Governor for Steam-Engines Harris Tabor Corning, Steuben County, NY Claim:
The invention relates to an improved governor for steam-engines, which acts in the customary manner when applied to an engine with single valves, and as an automatic cut- off.
206,500 Jul. 30, 1878 Governor for Valve Motions Harris Tabor Corning, Steuben County, NY Claim:
This invention relates to that class of governors in which the centrifugal ball or governor weight is applied directly to move the eccentric or its equivalent or substitute revolving on the same shaft with the governor-weight and the object of the invention is to reduce the cost of the mechanism hitherto employed in snch cases, andi to supply it.
272,578 Feb. 20, 1883 Steam Boiler John Oldham Corning, Steuben County, NY Claim:
The principal object of the invention set forth in this specification is to provide a steam- boiler with an internal firebox of large capacity relatively to the size of the external shell of the boiler, so that straw or other fuel which occupies a large space in proportion to its weight may be burned with advantage
Steam Boiler Benjamin N. Payne Corning, Steuben County, NY
294,069 Feb. 26, 1884 Steam Governor or Shifting Eccentric David W. Payne Corning, Steuben County, NY Claim:
Our invention relates to that class of shifting eccentrics which are employed as governors for steam-engines, and which comprise in their construction means for giving to the main or valve operating eccentric an angular motion relative to the shaft upon which it is mounted, said means consisting in some instances of a carriage upon which said eccentric is secured, and both being slotted for the embracement of the shaft to permit angular movement of the carriage and eccentric, while in other instances the main eccentric. has been mounted upon a secondary eccentric; and in all instances above indicated centrifugal weights and counterbalancing-springs have been employed.
Steam Governor or Shifting Eccentric Charles R. Williams Corning, Steuben County, NY
294,070 Feb. 26, 1884 Governor or Shifting Eccentric David W. Payne Corning, Steuben County, NY Claim:
Our invention relates to that class of steam-governors in which centrifugal force in revolving counterbalanced weights connected by suitable means with the main or valve governing eccentric is utilized, so that variations in the speed of rotation of the flywheel and of the shaft upon which it is mounted automatically varies the supply of steam to the cylinder, whereby uniformity of operation in the engine is secured, and it is adapted to meet the requirements of variations in its load or work. Heretofore said weights, one or more, have been pivotally secured -to the wheel, so as to be capable of swinging freely as pendulous weights, and suitable connecting-links have been secured between the weight and its pivot to its supporting-arm, and to suitable means for causing the main eccentric to be moved laterally in its relation to the shaft, so that as the weights swing outwardly by centrifugal force the eccentric, through the medium of the usual connecting-rod, partially shuts off the supply of steam, whereby the engine is slowed down. In practice such constructions are lacking in sensitiveness and serviceability by reason of the number of parts employed, the friction existing between them, especially between the weight-supporting arm and its pivot, and the necessity of using counterbalancing-springs of very high tension on account of the excessive strain upon them when the speed of rotation is high.
Governor or Shifting Eccentric Charles R. Williams Corning, Steuben County, NY
294,071 Feb. 26, 1884 Shifting Eccentric David W. Payne Elmira, Chemung County, NY Claim:
The object of this invention is to provide means for rendering the counterbalancing effect of the springs uniform throughout the entire movement of the weights, and, if desired, to render the effect of the springs and weights upon the valve more rapid or more sudden, as will hereinafter appear.
Shifting Eccentric Charles R. Williams Elmira, Chemung County, NY
305,257 Sep. 16, 1884 Shifting Eccentric Charles R. Williams Elmira, Chemung County, NY Claim:
This invention relates to shifting eccentrics, and has reference to that particular class which comprises pendulous weights carried by a wheel, disk, or framework mounted upon a shaft with which the eccentric is employed, and connected to the eccentric b5y such means that centrifugal force causes the weights to produce a movement of the eccentric across the shaft in accordance with the rapidity of rotation of the wheel or disk and shaft; and the invention in this instance will be hereinafter described, and the novel features thereof specifically set forth in the claims.
735,408 Aug. 04, 1903 Engine Governor David W. Payne Elmira, Chemung County, NY Claim:
My invention relates to centrifugal governors or regulators for steam or other fluid pressure engines of that class which are affixed to the flywheel or crankshaft of the engine or to a shaft rotated thereby and which effect the regulation of the engine-valve by varying the position of a loose or adjustable eccentric or eccentric-pin to which the valve-rod is connected; and the invention relates more particularly to that type of governor wherein the centrifugal and inertia efforts of the weights are utilized to secure isochronous regulation.
779,373 Jan. 03, 1905 Engine Governor David W. Payne Elmira, Chemung County, NY Claim:
This invention relates to improvements in ball-governors; and my object is to provide an to arrangement of centripetal springs whereby a governor of this type without being made isochronous will be given the closest possible approach to that condition consistent with good regulation of the controlling mechanism.
