In 1879, Robert Walker was apparently making a metal-working drill press. Robert Walker, a Yorkville blacksmith, was granted an 1871 patent for a drill press of novel design.

  • The Authorized Catalogue of the First Annual Exhibition of the Agricultural and Industrial Exhibition Association of Toronto, held in September 1879, lists, under "Drilling Machine, Medium": "R. Walker, Yorkville, York [County]." Yorkville was a village that was annexed by Toronto in 1883.
