William Douglas Westman exhibited a foot-powered circular saw and boring machine at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia. At an 1879 exhibition in Toronto, a J. Westman exhibited a scroll saw.

  • The Authorized Catalogue of the First Annual Exhibition of the Agricultural and Industrial Exhibition Association of Toronto, held in September 1879, lists J. Westman of Toronto as exhibiting a scroll saw.
  • William Douglas Westman was granted four patents between 1875 and 1882, including both Canadian and American patents for a treadle-powered scrollsaw.
