Abstract:
The invention to be hereinafter described relates to feed and speed changing devices for machine-tools wherein a series; of gears of different diameters and, in effect, constituting a cone of gears are driven from a driving-gear
through an intermediate gear, and has for its general object to provide a device of simple construction capable of ready manipulation to effect the changes desired and wherein the intermediate or transmitting gear shall have great ease of movement in changing its position to effect the desired speed.
Claim:
In a feed and speed changing mechanism for machine-tools, the combination of a series of gears of varying diameters, an elongated driving gear, a bearing cylinder disposed about the elongated driving-gear, and intermediate-gear carrier movable axially about and longitudinally of the bearing-cylinder, and an intermediate gear mounted on said carrier, and in constant engagement with the elongated driving-gear.

One object of the invention is the production of means for obtaining automatic feeds, both longitudinally and across the machine. A further object is to provide a single friction device for controlling both the longitudinal and cross feeds. A further object is to provide improved means for connecting the friction device with the operative parts. Another object is to provide an improved form of box apron. In carrying out our invention, the various feeds are obtained through a suitable drive pinion, which is rotated in either direction by any suitable means. Said drive pinion is loosely mounted on its shaft and may be connected up with a suitable power transmitting pinion by means of a friction device. The power transmitting pinion is adapted to engage a gear carrying a small pinion, both being mounted upon a slip stud, so that said gear may be thrown into and out of mesh with a suitable pinion adapted to drive the cross feed screw. When said gear is disengaged from the cross feed screw, the small pinion is thrown into mesh with a rack wheel which is adapted to move the carriage of the machine in any suitable manner.

In machines of this general character it has been proposed heretofore to provide an apron feed mechanism for imparting to the tool either its cross or lengthwise feed movements. Inasmuch as the feed movements of the carriage are liable to interruption from time to time or are to be adapted for different characters of work, it has heretofore been proposed to include in the apron feed mechanisms of such machines, a friction clutch and manually controlled means therefor, and such friction clutch has been found to be practically efficient in many kinds of work and it enables the carriage movements to be interrupted when desired and to be started again at the stopping point. A good practical form of such apron feed mechanism is shown in the prior patent granted to Le Blond and Groene, No. 980,971, January 10, 1911. Where an apron feed mechanism includes in its construction a friction clutch, there is a possibility at times and under certain conditions of work, that the clutch will slip and when the clutch members are disengaged, there is liability of the friction members creeping together or " winding up," as it is termed, and starting the feed. These actions of an apron feed provided with a friction clutch mechanism are well understood, and recognized in the art, but owing to the facility with which the carriage feed may be stopped and started at the same point, such friction clutch means are generally employed. In its broadest aspect, the present invention contemplates an apron feed provided with a driving member and a driven member and positive clutch connections, whereby said members may be placed in positive driving relation or disengaged from such position. In carrying this feature of the invention into practical effect, an apron feed mechanism of the general type of that shown and described in our prior Patent No. 980,971 is illustrated, wherein the tool may be given either cross or lengthwise feed movements, but it is to be understood, of course, that the invention is not restricted to this particular type of apron feed, and may be used effectively in other forms of apron feed mechanisms. In another aspect, an important feature of the present invention consists in forming the driving and driven members of the positive clutch of large diameters and providing them with a multiplicity of fine teeth to secure quick and satisfactory engagement. To this end, the gear deriving its motion from the feed rod of the lathe may be provided with a flange of large diameter having fine teeth extending therefrom, or such fine teeth may, of course, be secured to said gear and the driven member of the clutch may be provided in similar manner with a corresponding series of fine teeth. Motion from the driven member of the clutch may be transmitted to the feed elements in any suitable manner, and as a good form of means to this end, the driven member may have operatively connected to it, a gear from which a transmission train may be actuated. The present invention also provides means for positively effecting the engagement and disengagement of the driving and driven members of the apron feed to effect either cross or longitudinal feed movements. Such relative movements of the two clutch members to engage or disengage the fine teeth thereof may be variously effected, but a good practical form of the invention in this respect consists in manual means for moving the driven member to carry its large circle of fine teeth into engagement with the corresponding circle of fine teeth of the driving member. In the form of the invention illustrated, the driven member of the clutch is conveniently shown as formed on or connected to the hub of an elongated gear and clutch engaging and disengaging movements are effected in such illustrated form of the invention by movement of the elongated gear and driven member, but it will be understood that while this combination of elements is well adapted to the end desired, the essential in this respect is that the driven member having the large circle of fine teeth be movable into and out of engaging relation with the driving member and be operatively connected in any suitable manner with a gear for actuating the train of feed elements. To appropriately move the large circle of fine teeth of the two clutch members for quick and positive engagement or disengagement, manual means may be employed suitable to the purpose, but as shown in the illustrated form of the invention, such manual means consists of a rack and pinion arrangement, though obviously, this is not essential and may be variously modified.

Previously, (1) the machine of patent 2,030,020 was used to mill locating pads on the crankshaft webs; (2) line bearings were rough turned; (3) crankshaft was bent/straightened as needed to bring the rough-turned bearings into line; (4) rough-turned bearings were ground in preparation for mounting on an orbital lathe; (5) crank pins are turned simultaneously using the orbital lathe of patents 1,993,994 and 1,993,995; (6) flange and stub end diameters and associated surfaces were finished.
This lathe implements a production process that eliminates the bending/straightening operation and the rough grinding of the main bearings. The latter goal is accomplished by incrementally performing the turning and forming operations to avoid excessive tool pressures. Their "exemplary embodiment" uses three machining steps which was faster than rough grinding. Finally, the revised production process eliminates the separate operation to finish flange and stub end diameters and associated surfaces, but rather those surfaces are finished at the same time as the line bearings are being finish turned.

A positioning system for an indexable slide or turret comprises a bifurcated member located adjacent the turret and engageable with the teeth of a locating gear to accurately position the turret relative to the bifurcated member. The bifurcated member slides in a bore provided within a sleeve. Upon contacting a selected tooth of the gear, the sides of the bifurcated member are wedged apart by the tooth until they contact the sleeve so that each side is wedged between the tooth and the sleeve, thereby positively and accurately positioning the selected tooth of the gear and the attached tool turret.
Claim:
In a machine tool apparatus including a tool holding turret, a rotatable locating gear operably secured to said turret and indexing means for terminally positioning said gear and turret at a predetermined point including, a bore positioned in proximity to said gear, a reciprocating plunger means positioned in said bore for engaging said gear upon movement toward said gear, said plunger means including at its gear-engaging end a bifurcated yoke means for engaging a tooth of said gear, said bifurcated yoke means comprising an integral yoke having two side members resiliently and integrally joined together at respective rearward ends thereof, and disposed to operably engage internal surfaces of the bore upon engagement of the yoke means with a tooth of said gear so as to expand said yoke means, said turret being mounted upon a mounting plate attached to said gear, and hydraulic means for clamping said mounting plate and said turret to a plate support.

A machine tool including, a rotatable turret having oppositely disposed tool holders for alternatively positioning one of the tool holders in an active or cutting position relative to a workpiece and the other of the tool holders in an inactive or idle position, a magazine having a plurality of tool holding devices successively movable past a tool interchange station, tool transfer means for transferring tools between the magazine and the inactive turret tool holder, and means for retrieving a desired tool from the magazine. The retrieving means includes a stationary memory bank mounted independent of the magazine tool holding devices. The memory bank has a memory element allocated to each of the magazine tool holding devices which is susceptive of storing the arbitrary identifier of a tool positioned in the magazine tool holder to which it is allocated, and an accessing circuit for successively accessing the magazine tool holder memory elements as the tool holders to which they are respectively allocated successively move past the interchange station. A comparison circuit successively compares the identifiers stored in the successively accessed memory elements with the identifier of a desired tool, producing an output when the identifier of the desired tool is located at the interchange station. The contents of the memory elements allocated to the magazine tool storage devices, as well as certain additional memory elements allocated to the turret tool holders, are updated when a tool is transferred between the magazine and the inactive turret tool holder or between the active and inactive turret tool holders.

For use in combination with a machine tool having tools assigned identifiers for retrieval purposes, the tool retrieval system comprising: a plurality of tool holders sequentially movable past a reference station, a memory bank having a plurality of memory elements which are stationary and independently mounted relative to said movable tool holders, each of said memory elements being allocated to a different one of said tool holders for storing therein the arbitrary identifier assigned to a tool held by the tool holder to which said memory element is allocated, reading means for reading said memory elements, means for synchronizing the reading of said memory elements and said sequential movement of said tool holders, and means responsive to said reading means to develop an output in response to reading a memory element containing the identifier of a desired tool for locating said desired tool at said reference station.

Abstract
An improved spindle control mechanism for a lathe that includes, in preferred form, a rotatable control knob operably related to a plurality of spindle motor control and servo-control switches by a switch drum fixed thereto and operably connected to a spindle transmission through a control shaft by a connector link pivoted in an eccentric position at one end to the control knob and pivoted at the other end to a lever arm fixed to the control shaft. Rotation of the control knob into a forward position simultaneously translates the lathe's transmission into a forward spindle rotation position and starts the spindle drive motor. Rotation of the control knob into an intermediate stop position simultaneously stops the spindle drive motor and activates the spindle servo-control switch (which permits the spindle's rotation speed to be changed by a separate spindle servo-control mechanism, if desired). Rotation of the control knob into a reverse position simultaneously translates the transmission into a reserve spindle rotation position and starts the spindle drive motor.

Because the tools are located at varying angular positions on the turret, which positions are not even multiples of one another, the lathe incorporates an indexing control operable to index the turret through those varying angular arcs so as to enable any selected tool to be positioned at the tool cutting station of the machine.
