From 1830 to at least 1831, John H. Durgin and Robert Smith manufactured a shingle machine. They were manufacturing, under license, a designed patented by Willard Earl.

Information Sources

According to a research paper from Old Sturbridge Village, John H. Durgin and Robert Smith of Franklin, N. H. made the Earle's patent shingle machine. Their source is New Hampshire Patriot and State Gazette, May 31, 1830, Concord; North Star, May 31, 1831, Danville, Vermont.
