In the late 1860s and early 1870s, J. P. Roche manufactured shingle and barrel machinery.

- An 1866 patent for a barrel-making machine was granted to a P. H. Lawler of Rochester, and assigned to Lawler and D. W. Roche. An 1868 shingle-machine patent was granted to D. W. Roche and assigned to J. P. Roche.
- An 1870 directory of New York State listed J. P. Roches as a Rochester city councillor.
- An 1871 Rochester business directory has an ad for J. P. Roche: "Manufacturer of patent shingle, barrel and wood working machinery! Shafting, hangers and pulleys made to order. Shop, corner Mill and Platt Stts., Rochester, N. Y."
