Daniel R. Bowker and William P. Bensel received an 1861 patent for a stave machine. The machine was apparently manufactured by Mr. Bensel.

Information Sources

  • An article in the 1861-04-06 issue of Scientific American describes the stave machine that had been recently patented by Daniel R. Bowker and William P. Bensel of New York City. The article concludes, "...further information in relation to it may be obtained Wm. P. Bensel, at 550 Washington Street, this city."
  • Listed in Kenneth Cope's American Cooperage Machinery and Tools under the name "Bowker & Bensel". Cope's source appears to be the Scientific American article referenced above. Although the patent was granted to Messrs. Bowker and Bensel, the skimpy evidence suggests that Bensel was the manufacturer.
