In the mid-1880s, Joseph B. Davis received at least one patent for a saw-mill dog. He manufactured and sold the dog himself.

An ad from the May 1889 issue of "The Wood-Worker" is for "J. B. Davis' patent mill dog", sold by J. B. Davis, Monroeville, Ind. The illustration clearly shows an inscription of "DAVIS' PAT. / JULY 3, 1885". That is not a valid patent issue date because it is a Friday and patents are only issued on Tuesdays. We have found a sawmill dog patent granted to Joseph B. Davis of Monroeville, IN, on 1886-01-19; the sawmill dog illustrated in the patent bears no resemblance to the dog illustrated in the ad, though it is possible that the internal mechanism follows some principles from that covered by the 1886 patent.
We found nothing in the Cornell "Making of America" archives or the University of Michigan "Making of America" archives.
