This company seems to have evolved out of Smith & Garvin sometime between 1873 and 1883. In November 1889 it was reorganized as Garvin Machine Co.

This company specialized in machine tools (i.e., metalworking machines) but also made hand lathes. Their machine tool line included drill presses.

Information Sources

  • The June 1883 issue of Manufacturer & Builder has an illustrated article on E. E. Garvin & Co.'s screw slotter and cutter grinder machines.
  • From an October 1883 Manufacturer & Builder article on that year's New England Manufacturers' and Mechanics' Institute Fair: "[The Economy Supplies Company displayed products from a variety of companies, including] ...from E. E. Garvin & Co., of New York, milling machines, profiling machines, drill presses, screw-slotting machines, and hand lathes..."
  • The December 1883 issue of Manufacturer & Builder has a pair of illustrated articles on E. E. Garvin & Co. machines: one on their cutter grinder machine, and the other on their small automatic milling machine.
  • The September 1884 issue of Manufacturer & Builder says the following: "In addition to the two floors formerly occupied by E. E. Garvin & Co., 139-143 Center street, New York, since May 1st, they have fitted another floor, 70 by 70 feet, with machinery, which has added largely to their capacity for building machine tools. They have 125 men at work, and are shipping machines about as fast as they can be turned out complete for use."
  • The February and May 1884 issues of Manufacturer & Builder carried a notice of E. E. Garvin & Co. of 139-143 Center street's illustrated catalogue of machine tools.
  • From a December 1885 Manufacturer & Builder article on the annual Fair of the American Institute: "E. E. Garvin & Co., of 139 Center street, New York, exhibited a full line of their iron machine tools."
