William W. Giles, a maker of human-powered drag saws, was in St. Louis in 1878, in Cincinnati in 1879, and in Chicago by 1881. He received several patents for his machines. He successfully sued Farmers Manufacturing Co., another drag saw maker, for patent infringement.
