Key to Links for Patent Information

USPTO = U.S. Patent Office . Images of the actual patent can be viewed on the U.S. Patent Office web site but a special TIFF viewer must be installed with your browser in order properly work. More information on how to configure your computer to view these patents can be found at TIFF image Viewers for Patent Images.
DATAMP = Directory of American Tool And Machinery Patents . A sister site to VintageMachinery.org with information on patents related to machinery and tools. A much easier user interface than the USPTO's for finding information on machinery patents.

Patent Number Date Title Name City Description
132,086 Oct. 08, 1872 Improvement in log-carriages for sawmills Willard Lamb Green Bay, WI An 1875 ad from Willard Lamb shows this invention. "Foundrymen and saw mill machinists are requested to apply to me for manufacturers' licenses and terms of royalty." There is a list of 15 references, which we assume were users of the invention. Follow the link provided to Wm. H. Hiner & Co. and then look at the "Images" tab on that page to view the ad. One of the companies listed in the ad is E. P. Allis & Co., and an ad from that firm in the same book as the Lamb ad includes this text: "We make Willard Lamb's patent wire rope carriage movement that dispenses entirely with the cog gear. The Saw Carriage is much lighter and can be handled much more rapidly and at a much less expense than the old movements."

174,004 Feb. 22, 1876 Improvement in direct-acting steam-feed-works for circular-saw mills De Witt Clinton Prescott Marinette, WI This patent proved to be quite important because it replaced a complex arrangement of belts, pulleys, shafts, etc., to feed the carriage past the sawblade, replacing it with a long steam-cylinder holding a piston that is directly coupled to the log carriage. Slide-valves are used to regulate the forward and reverse motion. For a steam-powered sawmill this mechanism proved to be highly effective, controllable and reliable. See patent 360,972 for a subsequent improvement.
RE8,160 Apr. 09, 1878 Improvement in direct-acting steam-feed-works for circular-saw mills De Witt Clinton Prescott Marinette, WI This is a reissue of the important patent covering the direct-acting steam carriage feed for sawmills, especially circular sawmills.
215,293 May. 13, 1879 Improvement in balanced valves for steam-engines De Witt Clinton Prescott Marinette, Marinette County, WI This patent would form the basis for a clever modification to Prescott's famous direct-acting steam sawmill feed works, the modification providing more the more sensitive speed control needed for operation with band sawmills; see patent 360,972.

319,619 Jun. 09, 1885 Reciprocating saw-mill De Witt C. Prescott Marinette, WI Improvements to patent 296,618.
360,972 Apr. 12, 1887 Steam-feed for saw-mills De Witt Clinton Prescott Marinette, WI This patent is a modification to the important patent 174,004 to support its use on a band sawmill. The mechanism uses a steam-cylinder carrying a piston connected to the log-carriage, with a pair of slide-valves to control the forward and reverse motion. However, the control mechanism used in the earlier patent was not suitable for use with band mills because band mills require more careful feed-rate control. A steam chest, as in patent 215,293, is used, but whereas the earlier design applied full force to get the carriage moving, this design uses a series of increasingly large triangular valve-ports that permit a progressive and adjustable application of power.
363,169 May. 17, 1887 Feed and pressure mechanism for saw-mills De Witt Clinton Prescott Marinette, WI
368,731 Aug. 23, 1887 Bandsaw mill De Witt Clinton Prescott Marinette, WI "My invention relates to that class of sawmills known as 'band-mills,' and is an improvement upon the mill shown and described in my prior application, Serial No. 207,142, filed July 3 1886. The object of the present invention is to provide a more sensitive device for adjusting the upper band-wheel, whereby any slight slack in the saw is quickly taken up, so that the latter will be kept taut constantly." We have not found a patent corresponding to the referenced application.
369,881 Sep. 13, 1887 Bandsaw mill De Witt Clinton Prescott Marinette, WI The inventor's analysis of the failings of existing band mills was similar to that of Charles Esplin (patent 341,376), but where Esplin's designs failed to improve the state of the art, Prescott's succeeded. "My invention relates to that class of sawmills called 'band-mills,' and may be said to be an improvement upon the mill shown and described in my prior application, Serial No. 207,142, filed July 3, 1886. The object of the present invention is to provide for adjusting the upper band-wheel and to make the adjusting device exceedingly sensitive, so that the slightest change in strain will effect a movement of the said wheel, thereby taking up even slight slack almost instantly and keeping the saw always under proper strain." The inventor's 1910 monograph, "The Evolution of Modern Band Saw Mills for Sawing Logs", notes that of this sawmill design, "over 150 built and most of them are in service at the present time, 1910".
