Key to Links for Patent Information

USPTO = U.S. Patent Office . Images of the actual patent can be viewed on the U.S. Patent Office web site but a special TIFF viewer must be installed with your browser in order properly work. More information on how to configure your computer to view these patents can be found at TIFF image Viewers for Patent Images.
DATAMP = Directory of American Tool And Machinery Patents . A sister site to VintageMachinery.org with information on patents related to machinery and tools. A much easier user interface than the USPTO's for finding information on machinery patents.

Patent Number Date Title Name City Description
1,231,238 Jun. 26, 1917 Gage Ray L. Carter Syracuse, NY Of interest because inventor Ray Carter developed the first successful general-purpose router; see patent 1,433,497.
1,244,584 Oct. 30, 1917 Disk grinder Ray L. Carter Syracuse, NY The patented disk sander design has a rather interesting history. It was first manufactured by Pioneer Dustless Disk Co. of Syracuse; as the name suggests, the emphasis was on the machine's integrated dust collection. Within a year or so it was being manufactured under the name of Syracuse Sander Mfg. Co. That firm was acquired by Porter-Cable Machine Co. in 1922.
Inventor Ray Carter later developed the first successful general-purpose router; see patent 1,433,497.
1,277,377 Sep. 03, 1918 Sanding-machine Ray L. Carter Syracuse, NY The invention is an oscillating spindle sander that was sold as the Syracuse S-1 and, once Porter-Cable bought them out in 1922, the Porter-Cable S-1. Essentially the same mechanism was used in the benchtop versions, O-2, O-3, and O-4.
This patent is of additional interest because inventor Ray Carter developed the first successful general-purpose router; see patent 1,433,497.
1,302,131 Apr. 29, 1919 Centering-gage Ray L. Carter Syracuse, NY Of interest because inventor Ray Carter developed the first successful general-purpose router; see patent 1,433,497.
1,433,497 Oct. 24, 1922 Shaping device Ray L. Carter Syracuse, NY The invention is a handheld router intended for rounding and beading corners.
1,514,894 Nov. 11, 1924 Portable routing and profiling machine Ray L. Carter Syracuse, NY
1,524,234 Jan. 27, 1925 Hinge-recess gauge Ray L. Carter Syracuse, NY
1,527,785 Feb. 24, 1925 Plane Ray L. Carter Syracuse, NY Ray L. Carter invented the router when he modified an electric tool for barbers. His business was acquired by the Stanley Works in the early 1930s, and subsequently operated as the R. L. Carter Division. This patent number—along with patent 1,658,185—was seen on a Model SPN power planer from Mall Tool Co., and called the "Electric Mall Plane".
1,532,683 Apr. 07, 1925 Combined mortising and shaping machine Ray L. Carter Syracuse, NY
1,536,659 May. 05, 1925 Adjustable cutter head Ray L. Carter Syracuse, NY
1,551,236 Aug. 25, 1925 Means for cooling high-speed motors Ray L. Carter Syracuse, NY Improvement to patent 1,433,497.
1,565,790 Dec. 15, 1925 Portable routing machine Ray L. Carter Phoenix, NY This patent covers the plunge router. The patent references patents 1,514,894, 1,532,683, and 1,584,078.
1,566,373 Dec. 22, 1925 Router bit Ray L. Carter Phoenix, NY
1,566,824 Dec. 22, 1925 Shaper Ray L. Carter Phoenix, NY This is a router for corner treatments, especially rounding and chamfering. The router sits at 45 degrees to the corner, an approach that proved to be an evolutionary dead end.
1,581,719 Apr. 20, 1926 Blower for routing machines Ray L. Carter Phoenix, NY
1,581,720 Apr. 20, 1926 Flexible shoe for routing machines Ray L. Carter Phoenix, NY "This invention relates to portable routing and shaping machines, and has for its object to provide novel means for preventing the machine and its holder from abrading or otherwise marring and injuring delicate or finished surfaces of the work. A particular object is to provide a flexible shoe for use in connection with routing machines employed by printers and for routing cylindrical or flat stereotype plates, wherein the routers are moved frictionally over the relatively soft lead-like impression faces of the type, and deface or mar and render the plates unfit for printing..."
1,584,078 May. 11, 1926 Portable routing and profiling machine Ray L. Carter Syracuse, NY
