This scrollsaw maker was in business roughly 1873 through 1876, and perhaps for longer.

Information Sources

  • Listed in a work published by the United States Centennial commission, Official Catalog of the 1876 International Exhibition, as a maker of a scrollsaw.
  • Manufacturer & Builder had this to say about Dowling's exhibit at the Centennial Exhibition: "Mr. F. W. Dowling of Detroit, Mich., displays his improved scroll saw. The principles upon which it is constructed are simplicity in design and durability in make, it being iron frame table and iron ceiling attachment complete. The working parts are all of steel with cold rolled cast steel band springs, without temper. The tops are provided with a guide to let down to hold the timber if required."
