Listed in a work published by the United States Centennial commission, Official Catalog of the 1876 International Exhibition, as a maker of a stave-jointing machine. The name is given as "Samuel R. Palmer", which was likely a corruption of Lemuel R. Palmer. The latter name appears on a couple of 1871 stave-jointer patents.
