This firm began as S. E. Canfield & Co. in 1837, specializing in farm and garden implements. At some point in the 1850s or '60s they manufactured a Gould pattern mortiser, and, later in the 1860s they were making a power mortiser also. In mid-1869 the business name changed to Pearson & Co.
