Listed in the 1874 work, Wiley's American iron trade manual of the leading iron industries of the United States: "Atlanta Machine Works - Proprietors, Porter & Butler. Location of works, Atlanta. Engines, cotton-presses, grist and saw mills. 75 hands employed."
