Key to Links for Patent Information

USPTO = U.S. Patent Office . Images of the actual patent can be viewed on the U.S. Patent Office web site but a special TIFF viewer must be installed with your browser in order properly work. More information on how to configure your computer to view these patents can be found at TIFF image Viewers for Patent Images.
DATAMP = Directory of American Tool And Machinery Patents . A sister site to VintageMachinery.org with information on patents related to machinery and tools. A much easier user interface than the USPTO's for finding information on machinery patents.

1,053,940 Feb. 18, 1913 Universal motor James Burke Erie, PA "This invention relates to electric motors, and more particularly relates to an electric motor which is adapted to be actuated by either single phase alternating currents or direct currents, and to a method of varying the speed and changing the direction of rotation of the motor when supplied with alternating current of the same voltage."
A 1919 advertisement for handheld electric drills and grinders from Independent Pneumatic Tool Co. carries the phrase, "Licensed Under Burke Universal Motor Patent". A condensed catalog for Duntley (a brand for Chicago Pneumatic Tool Co.) shows their "Universal Electric Drills". "This type of tool is fully covered by letters patent granted February 18, 1913."

1,117,140 Nov. 10, 1914 Portable electrically-driven tool Joseph A. Osborn St. Louis, MO This patent covers the "Osborn Safety Device". On highly geared drills with powerful motors, the tool can be twisted out of the operator's hands if the bit binds; the Osborn Safety Device stops the drill very quickly when that happens. The device provides a dead-man switch on the handle that, when released, disconnects the motor from power and reconnects the motor as a generator and across a resistor, which stops its rotation within a half a revolution. A 1914 bulletin from the Chicago Pneumatic Tool Co. describes this invention. An article in the October 1917 issue of Safety Engineering also describes it, and notes that it had been placed on the list of approved safety devices from the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry.
