Bêché & Grohs was established in 1867 by Jean Bêché and Peter Johann Grohs. In their early years they made products outside the scope of this website, namely textile machinery and centrifugal machines. At some point the company's focus shift toward pneumatic power hammers.

In 1910 the Philadelphia-based Nazel Engineering & Machine Works introduced the Bêché air hammer to the US market. This machine had integrated air compressor, needing only an electrical connection rather than the lineshaft, belts and steam lines needed by typical steam hammers of the day. At first Nazel sold machines imported from Germany and later they manufactured the Bêché-designed air hammers themselves under license.

In 1932 Bêché & Grohs designed and built the first counterblow hammer which would speed up the forging of large parts by the use of opposing dies that strike the part on both sides simultaneously.

At some point the company's lineup of power hammers became part of the Schuler Group via Müller Weingarten.
